Could bank transfers be costing you money?
20 May 2008
Bank transfers at many institutions will not cost you any money if you do them through online banking facilities. Of course, this may not be the case for you and you may not even know it. While this can often be put down to fine print, many people do not read any part of their usage agreements or contracts. If an entire document is considered fine print, then you would also have to begrudge the banks the benefits that are detailed in your agreements.
Nevertheless, you will need to find out if bank transfers are costing you money to avoid any unpleasant dips in your funds. When looking over your agreements, there are certain things you are likely to find that could mean bank transfers are costing you money. You may be given a decent number of free transactions per month, for instance, but after this they may be charged. This can be difficult to spot, as you may only become suspicious of this once you have received a bank statement, and the next time you make bank transfers you may be using free ones again. The other likely cost in bank transfers is if you receive or transfer money internationally. Exchange charges or commissions are quite common, but if you aren't aware of them you can be charged a surprising amount for them.
